PhotoAlliance, in collaboration with the Smith Andersen North Gallery, is proud to announce an open call for Bay Area Currents, a photographic competition juried by distinguished professionals celebrating the diversity and breadth of photographic practices stemming from around the San Francisco Bay Area.

THEME:

There is no single theme for this call, instead we are looking to see what you have been up to of late- enter whatever work you would like to share as a broad range of interpretations through photography is invited including documentary, expressive, or experimental. Submissions may be depicted in any style and utilize any process or camera type.

As part of the PhotoAlliance exhibition program, Bay Area Currents was established to provide an opportunity for local artists working with photography to exhibit in the Bay Area and to discover and connect with other artists in the community. We approach the word “local” loosely, primarily as a means to indicate PhotoAlliance’s interest in connecting artists who have ties to the Bay Area with one another. We encourage all to attend the opening reception on September 08, 2018.

 

AWARDS & BENEFITS:

45 winning entries will be exhibited at the Smith Andersen North Gallery in San Anselmo, California from September 1- 29th, 2018.

• All winning entries will be screened before a public PhotoAlliance lecture event in San Francisco and online at PhotoAlliance.org.     

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

There will be no shipping of artwork. Winning entries must be delivered by hand to the gallery, framed and ready to hang on the wall. At the end of the exhibition, all works must be picked up by hand. We are unable to accommodate framed works larger than 24 x 30 inches in size.  Photographers of all ages, nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels are invited to enter, but must reside in one of the nine    San Francisco Bay Area Counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma.

        DEADLINE:  Monday July 23, 2018 (Midnight, PDT)

  • June 12, 2018: Call for entry opens

  •  July 23, 2018 (Midnight, PDT): Deadline for submissions

  • August 6, 2018: Winners announced

  • August 25, 2018: Artwork drop off at Smith Andersen North Gallery  (20 Greenfield Avenue, San Anselmo CA)

  • August 29, 2018–September 29, 2018: Exhibition open to public

  •  September 8, 2018: Opening reception !

  • September 29, 2018: Artwork Pickup at Smith Andersen North Gallery

 

APPLICATION:

All entries will be judged on merit. Two levels of entry fees are available, but all images will be juried in a single pool.

General Entry Fee: $45 for up to 5 images.

Student Entry Fee: $30 for up to 5 images. (proof of current full-time student status required)

About Smith Andersen North Gallery

Smith Andersen North was established in 2004 and is one of the Bay Area’s premier exhibition venues.  SAN maintains an active exhibition schedule, curating shows by established and emerging artists, primarily from the San Francisco Bay Area. Our emphasis is on twentieth-century and contemporary fine art photography and photo-based art. Our goal is to work closely with the artists and show a broad spectrum of work.
